Baal Hamon

BAAL HAMON
B ‘ l  ḥ m n (fen), Balamoun (gr), Balamon (lat).

BAAL HAMON
B ‘ l ḥ m n (phoenician), Balamoun (greek) Balamon (latin). Most probably the name means "Lord of the Amanus." The oldest record of this divine name goes back to 825 BC coming from Zincirli, which was the capital of a small Aramaic principality on the eastern slopes of the Amanus (KAI 24 = TSSI III, 13.16). The word ḥ m n can also be found in the Phoenician designation P ‘ r ḥ m n (KAI 26 = TSSI III, 15, A6 / Bordreuil, cataloque 4): Pahar Amanus (= the country Amanus). In the Akkadian texts form Hamanu occurs. Master of the Amanus was the god Dagan or Dagon. Again we see a change in the "a" to "o". Baal Hamon was therefore originally a title that was given to Dagon.
However, this was only the beginning of the occurrence of Baal Hamon! Much more later!

Verspreiding:
----------------

Spread of Baal Hamon:
----------------------------
In the East the cult of Baal Hamon spread to the region of Tyre. In the 6th century BC we encounter there in the Tyre region an amulet (StPhoen.4, 1986, p.82-86) with ordinations to Baal Hamon from Palmyra (B ‘ l  ḥ m n) and here in Tyre itself the personal names Ha-mu-na-a-a and Ab-di-He-mu-nu occur (Benz, Names p.154 + BASOR 230.1978, p.58). In the west Baal Hamon comes forward in many memorial stones with an inscription on the urn fields, where there is often mention of a 'molk'. He is then often accompanied by Tanit, face of Baal. Thereby centers are Malta, Carthage, Hadrumetum, Mididi, Cirta and in the colonies of Carthage in Sicily and Sardinia. In later times take place assimilations to Kronos, Saturn and Pluto. The name Baal Hamon remains in vogue until the 1st century AD. (Cdb3, 1953, p.113-118). Still the deity is also probably worshiped under the names Baal Addir and Baal Qarnaim. In the latter case he is called in Latin inscriptions Balcarnen(sis) (Djebel Qournein).

Karakter:

Character of Baal Hamon:
--------------------------------
Baal Hamon as Dagon to Saturn is an agricultural deity. In Utica, Carthage and Hadrumetum we see him in pictures with all agricultural signs. Statues from Thinissut, Hadrumetum, Malta and Genoni and Baal Hamon and a memory stone from Cirta show him sitting on a throne with a corn stalk or three ears of corn in his left hand (StPhoen 4. 1986, p.330-333, 342-343). The ear of corn can also be found on the Punic and Neopunic coins. The additions 'frugifer' and 'deus frugum' to African Saturn confirm once more the agricultural character of Baal Hamon, who followed in the footsteps of Dagon. It also explains the 'molk' sacrifice to Baal Hamon, because the human sacrifice is an expression of the fertility cult. The crown on the head consisting of vegetation leaves at Genoni, El Hofra and Thinissut is another manifestation of the agrarian character. In the east, there is talk of building a grove for the Kronos of Arwad (IGLS VII, 4002). In Etymologicum magnum (p.196,52) has even been called a city: Betagon (Bet Dagon), which becomes clear that Dagon is the Kronos of the Phoenicians. The coupling of Baal Hamon to the sun or the moon is not evident. There are only seen traces of that with the African Saturn.

Baal & Ugarit

Baal and Ugarit.
============
Die Mythologie der Ugariter und Phönizier, M.H.Pope/W.Röllig : Wörterbuch der Mythologie – 1, Stuttgart 1965 (p.266):
"Message of the mighty Baal,
Word of the mighty hero:
Eliminate the war on earth,
Eliminate the dispute in the country;
Pour peace into the interior of the earth,
Increase friendship among the fields! "

The UN could not have said it in a better way!

BAAL

BAAL

Originally, this word is a common noun or a generic name for the Semitic b‘l = owner, Sir, husband, as in M l q r t Ṣ r (CIS I, 122 = 47 = KAI TSSI III, 21-22). However, in the Syro-Phoenician domain means it an early deity and almost always of the storm. Baal is already found in Ebla (ca.2300 BC) at Abu Salabikh and then Mari and in the el-Amarna texts. In Ugarit Baal is as BaalSaphon very important as the son of Dagan. He reigns as the god of the storm, clouds, the thunder, the lightning, the rain and snow. He is the almighty (’al’iyn), master of the earth (ZBL b ‘ l ’rṢ) and king. His myth gives his death by Môt, but also his resurrection as a god of vegetation. He is also a master of the order against the chaos of the Sea (Yam), he often is depicted as a bull, in which he anthropomorphic with a helmet with horns and a bundle of lightning.
In the Phoenician texts Baal comes forward as follows:
- Yd B ‘l = blessed by Baal (KAI 30.4);
- Brk B ‘l = blessed by Baal (KAI 26 A, 1.1);
- B 'br B ‘l w’lm = by the grace of Baal and the gods;
- P n B ‘l = face of Baal (adding Tanit);
- Š m B ‘l = name of Baal (KAI 14.18 at Astarte);
- S m B ‘l = effigy of Baal (KAI 12, 3-4).
- Baal of Sidon (KAI 14.18);
- Baal Kalenderis (KAI 26A, from 11.19 - 20);
- Baal Saphon (KAI 69.1);
- Baal of Lebanon (KAI 31.1-2);
- Baal Hermon (Jg 3,3);
- Baal of Tabor and Carmel.
Furthermore, we find Baal amongst others in the following combinations:
- Baal Hamon (among others KAI 24.16);
- Baal ymm (KAI 37 B4);
- Baal Mgnm (KAI78,3-4);
- Baal Ṣmd (KAI 24.15);
- Baal pn ’rṢ = Baal face of the earth (KAI 27.14 -15);
- Baal šmm = Baal of the heavens (KAI 4.3);
- Baal KR .. (Karatepe);
- Baal ’dr (o.a.KAI 9 B 5).
